“The international children’s festival is one of Washington’s most unique cultural events,” NBC 4’s Barbara Harrison said during her remarks at the opening ceremony. “It’s amazing to see each and every one of you travel around the world without having to go any farther than Meridian’s beautiful grounds.”
Highlights from the booths included art projects, samples of native cuisine, and displays pertaining to current events. The live outdoor stage featured ancient dance rituals, presentations of traditional music, and other various performances.
A few of the participating countries even had their ambassadors on hand to interact with the guests by explaining the different aspects of their countries’ booths and answering questions about their cultures. Ambassador Houda Ezra Ebrahim Nono from Bahrain and Ambassador Neneh Macdouall-Gaye from The Gambia were among those in attendance.
NBA legend Gheorghe Muresan from Romania joined Harrison for the opening ceremony, discussing some of the highlights of his career and how he got started playing basketball. At 7 feet 7 inches tall, Muresan is the tallest man ever to play in the NBA. Muresan posed for photographs with guests and spent time exploring the festival activities.
Meridian teamed up with its affiliate, THIS for Diplomats, along with Higher Achievement and Cultural Tourism D.C. (CTDC) for this year’s festival. The event was part of the annual Passport D.C program. Every May, CTDC presents an exploration of they Washington’s vibrant international cultural community though numerous events around the city.
