West Bank / Gaza - Building the Foundation: Peace and Conflict Education in Early Childhood Development Programs

The project Building the Foundation: Peace and Conflict Education in Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programs has been implemented by Meridian International Center since spring 2007 and is being funded by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. It was originally developed in collaboration with the Al Quds University in Jerusalem, which has a highly regarded center for Early Childhood Development and subsequently implemented in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Palestine Red Crescent Society, Tomorrow’s Youth Organization and PenMedia. The project is designed to create the capacity of Palestinian early childhood development teachers and administrators to incorporate age-appropriate peace and conflict resolution curricula into ECD programs operated by non-governmental organizations throughout the West Bank and Gaza. The project will develop a total of seven curriculum modules that are designed to incorporate age-appropriate peace and conflict resolution, family involvement, community involvement and health concepts. The project also develops the capacity of Palestinian early childhood development teachers and administrators to incorporate new curricula into their existing ECD programs. A total of 23 ECD centers will take part in the program and 70-80 teachers will participate in the training. It is expected that each year some 800-1000 kids would be taught using in the various curriculum modules.
