Meridian has joined forces with national and international organizations to create an exhibition designed to encourage reading, physical fitness, a love of the outdoors, and a healthy lifestyle among America's children. Exploring the Great Outdoors: Sports and Recreation in Original Illustrations from Children's Books is third in a series of educational exhibitions based upon illustrations from children's books organized by Meridian. The exhibition includes approximately 80 original illustrations of outdoor activities ranging from traditional sports to recreational pursuits of all kinds and will be on view at Meridian beginning November 16, 2002.
Illustrations from many of the books we knew as children or have read to our own families are part of this beautiful and educational exhibition. Works were chosen to show artists' approaches to perspective, the wide range of media employed, and the process by which art is transformed to the printed page. Children of all ages will find favorites among these 80 colorful illustrations as Exploring the Great Outdoors is outstanding in both its content and quality.
Works contained in the exhibition come from a wide range of illustrators using many artistic media. Among illustrators included are Barbara Cooney, Palmer Cox, Tomie de Paola, Ruth Heller, Syd Hoff, William Joyce, Betsy & Ted Lewin, Jerry Pinkney, Leo Politi, H. A. Rey and David Wiesner.
The exhibition also includes work by international illustrators from Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Great Britain, Iceland, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Slovenia, Sweden, and Thailand depicting outdoor activities enjoyed in these countries.
Artworks are drawn from the De Grummond Collection (Mississippi), the Gladys English Collection of the Los Angeles Public Library (California), the Kerlan Collection (Minnesota), the Mazza Museum (Ohio), and the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (Texas). Exhibition organizers also borrowed works from illustrators abroad with the assistance of their embassies in Washington, DC The exhibition is exceptional in its emphasis on a wide range of partners all focusing on children's book illustrations.
This visually compelling exhibition will be accompanied by a teacher's guide, and a full-color catalogue. Many of the books for which the illustrations were created also will accompany the show.
